Department of Agriculture-MiMaRoPa Region turned over organic hydroponics greenhouse garden worth P3-million to the Island Municipality of Kalayaan in Palawan on June 9, 2017.
Kalayaan is found in the westernmost part of Palawan, situated in the West Philippine Sea. Arable land and water are scarce in the municipality, thus the civil service organization requested the said project to be built in Bgy. Berong, Quezon where the Kalayaan Resource Center is situated.
With the hydroponic garden, crops can grow healthier and more efficient because water and nutrients will be fed directly to its roots.
The project was made possible through the Bottom-Up Budgeting Program with a counter-parting scheme from the local government unit (LGU).
The said fund was used for the building of the greenhouse worth Php1.5-million; Php 500,000 for the organic production and the remaining Php1-million will be used for training and maintenance.
Before it was officially turned over to the municipality, members of the CSO underwent 120 days of Seasoned-Term Training on Organic Hydroponics, Greenhouse Operation and Management and Open-field Vegetable Production. It started on the last week of February that was facilitated by the Dr. Celso Olido, Regional Evaluation and Planning Officer; Nex Base, Regional Planning Officer and Leonardo Enriquez, Agriculture Program Coordinating Officer-Palawan South.
Along the turnover ceremony, a graduation was also held for the trainees.
