In its effort to provide alternative food and livelihood resources to farmers and other beneficiaries, Department of Agriculture conducted a technical briefing on corn and cassava followed by a cooking demonstration to community leaders and guest participants in San Aquilino, Roxas, Oriental Mindoro last October 28-31.

Resource speakers Edgar Capuyan and Josephine Guillermo discussed DA’s interventions and market summaries of corn and cassava as they highlight the crops’ overall benefits and compatibility with the soil and seasonality in Mindoro. Furthermore, the speakers presented various preparations and end-products emphasizing the alternative advantages in response to constant market inflation on raw materials.

In line with this, Bureau of Plant Industry – National Plant Quarantine Service Division Representatives Emerson Macalindog and Maria Reneliza Vergara conducted a briefing on the Fall Armyworm, a nationally-recognized threat to various farm fields hosting primarily on corn, rice, sugarcane, sorghum, potato, eggplant, tomato, pepper, tobacco, crucifers, cucurbit, peanut, soybean, cotton, banana, and sweet potato. The discussion covered a brief introduction, emphasis on sustainable management thru Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and other recommended pest management strategies.

Given the Information, education, and communication (IEC) materials, together with the cassava recipes, the members, grouped in five, prepared the following recipes; chicken soup, cassava rolls, cassava cake, pitsi pitsi, and polvoron. The day was concluded with a feast wherein officials, neighboring folks, guests and onlookers were invited to join and share in the activity.
