Enriching Farmers’ Awareness on Corn
Engr. Ma. Christine C. Inting, Regional Corn and Cassava Coordinator, discusses the programs and services of Corn Program to the participants.

Enriching Farmers’ Awareness on Corn

Six (6) batches of Technical Briefings on Corn Production with Emphasis on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) were conducted in Marinduque. It was held in all municipalities of the province from March 22 to 30, 2017.

It aims to increase the awareness and knowledge of farmers on corn production and to improve their management practices on pests and diseases. These will help in increasing their production of corn for human consumption, feeds, and industrial uses.

The Department of Agriculture – MiMaRoPa Corn program through the leadership of the Corn & Cassava Focal Person, Engr. Ma. Christine C. Inting, discussed the plant parts and uses of corn as well as the production.

IPM was also tackled in order to eliminate or reduce the use of pesticides that are harmful to human health, animals, and environment.

In line with the DA’s goal in ensuring the food safety and producing quality products, the Corn group encouraged the farmers to practice Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and to be certified in preparation for Association of Southeast Asia Nation (ASEAN) Trading. This will help in creating opportunities for farmers to access the agricultural crops in ASEAN markets and other foreign markets.

The Corn group also presented their programs and encouraged the farmers to organize their association to avail interventions like machineries and equipment they need in their farm.

Engr. Inting also mentioned that they will be back on May to conduct technical briefing on cassava production with cooking demonstration of its recipes.
